Silence.
That is the gap hiding inside a lot of backup plans.
The backup runs. The dashboard shows a green checkmark. Nobody gets an error message, so everyone assumes the important files are safe.

Ask where the backups are and you may hear:
“They’re in the cloud.”
“Microsoft handles that.”
“Pretty sure there’s an external drive.”
Good to know. Now, can anyone actually get a file back?
Would anyone know where to look? Could you recover yesterday’s version? How far back could you go? Who has the login? And are we talking five minutes, five hours, two days?
Cloud storage, file syncing, and backup are not always the same thing.
If a file is deleted, overwritten, or damaged, the system may quickly sync that problem everywhere.
Efficient, yes. Helpful, no.
Try Getting Something Back
The only test that matters is an actual restore. Pick an ordinary file and recover it.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends regularly verifying that your recovery system can actually restore information from backups.
Can you find the right version? Does it open? Is anything missing? How long does it take?
A simple test on a quiet afternoon can expose missing folders, forgotten passwords, and unrealistic recovery times before they become a real problem.
